The Development Status and Competitive Landscape of China's Wind Turbine Industry

Date:2026-05-30 View:98

I. Current Status of the Fan Industry

The fan industry is one of the most important segments of China's general machinery sector and holds a significant position in the national economy. The compressors, blowers, and ventilators produced by this industry are applied across various fields. Currently, fans are widely used in industries such as cement, mining, and metal smelting; consequently, the prosperity of the fan industry is closely linked to the operational status of the macroeconomy.

Driven by the rapid development of downstream industries—including mining, rail transit construction, and petrochemicals—as well as the increase in major national projects, China's fan production has shown a steady growth trend since 2014. Output increased from 11.81 million units in 2013 to 36.1976 million units, with an average annual growth rate exceeding 10%.

China entered the "13th Five-Year Plan" period in 2016. With the national economy transitioning into a "new normal" and undergoing industrial structural adjustments in the past two years, the fan industry has faced both opportunities and challenges. Since 2018, due to the impact of supply-side structural reform, products with outdated technology and high energy consumption have been gradually phased out, leading to a slight decline in operating revenue for enterprises within the industry since 2018. In 2019, the fan industry achieved a main business operating income of 79.972 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.36%; total profits reached 4.357 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 8.79%.

II. Downstream Demand Distribution and Energy Consumption

Currently, downstream demand for the fan industry is concentrated in sectors such as construction, environmental protection, energy, and chemicals. Among these, the construction industry is the largest downstream market, accounting for 20.46%, primarily utilizing fans for ventilation and dust removal in coal mines, non-coal mines, tunnels, and other construction and mining fields.

Fans are high-power, energy-intensive equipment and constitute a major source of energy consumption in national production. It is estimated that the electricity consumed by fans nationwide accounts for approximately 10% of the country's total power generation. Therefore, improving the actual operational efficiency of fans is crucial for enterprises aiming to meet energy conservation and consumption reduction targets, creating significant demand for energy-efficient solutions. However, overall, the actual operational efficiency of domestic fans remains low. Only 12% of tested fans exceed an efficiency rate of 80%. Efficiency is particularly poor in sectors such as cement, mining, and aluminum production. For instance, the average efficiency of fans in the aluminum industry is only 63%, while in the mining sector, it averages just 55%.

III. Import and Export Situation

China's general machinery industry possesses substantial potential for foreign investment, enterprise mergers and acquisitions, establishing global networks, and international cooperation on major projects. Products such as various compressors, fans, liquid pumps, refrigeration and air-conditioning machinery (and their compressors), plastic machinery, industrial dust removal equipment, and general machinery parts hold considerable competitive advantages in the international market.

In recent years, China's fan export performance has remained generally stable. The primary export products have shifted from small and medium-sized blowers and air conditioning fans to large exhaust fans, blower equipment, and Roots blowers. High-pressure blowers are mainly exported to destinations including Hong Kong (China), the United States, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Germany, and Thailand.

As domestic fan manufacturing technologies have become largely mature in recent years, the import volume of fans has shown a declining trend annually, dropping from 3.123 million units in 2015 to 2.212 million units in 2019.

IV. Industry Development Trends

Currently, the machinery manufacturing sector, represented by the fan industry, faces new situations and challenges regarding its extension into the service industry. General machinery manufacturers are required to enhance their capabilities to provide comprehensive services to end-users, ranging from market research and equipment usage information to after-sales service.

The future of fan manufacturing will embrace the era of smart manufacturing. Digitization, electronic automation, informatization, and robotics are the fundamental elements of smart manufacturing. The application of these technologies is bound to elevate fan manufacturing levels, ensuring stable and reliable improvements in product quality and work efficiency while significantly reducing labor intensity for operators. With the advancement of next-generation information technology, smart manufacturing, new materials, and novel processes, traditional CNC machining is poised for breakthrough developments. High efficiency, high precision, intelligence, and diverse manufacturing methods will become the norm for processing core fluid machinery components such as impellers and blades.
